Set on a rotating stage reminiscent of totalitarian spectacle, the performers' faces are projected as they narrate lives shaped by historic trauma: Sarajevo under siege, Belgrade during NATO bombings, a concentration camp survivor searching for his father’s remains. Western and Eastern Europe’s intertwined pasts emerge through intimate biography and collective memory.
With contributions from actors Vedrana Seksan, Sanja Mitrović, Sudbin Musić, Valery Tscheplanova, and Manfred Zapatka, The Dark Ages continues Rau’s urgent investigation into Europe’s violent legacy and the theatrical mechanisms of power and representation.
